In front of a large crowd, Sega
announced their "Internet Digital
Camera," DreamEye. The Dreameye can
hook up with the Dreamcast controller
port, giving you video capturing
capabilities and sending it to someone
else through the Dreamcast email. It get even
better, the Dreameye comes with a
microphone, so you can send a little
video to a friend or someone with sound.
The microphone connects to the
controller, like in Seaman. Hideki Satou,
a managing director at Sega explains to
the main functions of the Dreameye: video
e-mail, photo e-mail, and video
teleconferencing. The video e-mail
feature allows you to send 25 seconds of
video through the email. If you want to
save a certain video, it can be saved
into the VMU.
The photo email allows you to
take a picture of someone or something,
and send it through the email. Each
picture is capable of having 310,000
pixels. It gets better, lets say
you want to take the Dreameye outside.
Just put in two AAA batteries, and your
of. No plug is need to connect it to the
Dreamacast. With each pair of batteries,
it can hold 300 pictures, and 31 640X480
shots can be kept in the camera's flash
memory.
It just keeps getting better,
the shots taken through the Dreameye can
be edited through a program called
"Dream Photo Fun," developed by
Sega and PictureIQ. Your sister ticking
you off? Get a picture of her with the
Dreameye, put in the Dream Photo Fun
software, add little molds, pimples, and
other stuff on her face, and give it to
your sister's friends!
Anyway, during the conference in
Tokyo, Sega showed off the video email to
the public. With Sega president Shoichiro
Irimajiri talking from the Mila 2000 show
in Paris with Mr. Satou in Tokyo.
Although the Japanese Dreamcast had a
33.6k modem, everything worked fine. The
frames were around from 3 to 5 frames per
second.
This is my favourite part, ever
wished you could see a image of your
friend or someone when talking to them
through the phone? You know, like in
movies like the new James Bonds. Well, it
can be done with the Dreameye. You can
make a video phone call, like Mr. Satou
and Shoichiro Irimajiri did. With the
camera, you can adjust the brightness
colour and volume of sound.
I'm pretty sure everybody knew
about this Digital Camera for the
Dreamcast way back in October. Well,
that's because, the Dreameye was all
finished and ready to be released. But
Sega held it back to make the camera and
software more user friendly, and so that the
hardware pricing can go down. The price
of the Dreameye is yet to be announced,
lets hope its less that $100. I hope you
enjoy these pictures of the Dreameye from
IGNDC.
